Dear Parents and carers,
It has been lovely seeing our parents unmasked across the last week and it feels like I’m meeting families for the first time now that we are able to see everyone’s faces. Please remember that although you are no longer required to wear masks outside at school, masks are still required for all adults inside at school, and lets continue to be COVID safe by ensuring that we are keeping our distance from each other while on site.
The staff carpark in New Rd has been a really busy place over the last week or two and we are feeling increasingly concerned about the safety of students when we are having parents picking up and dropping off in this area, we ask that parents please park on the street or use the parking area on the other side of the school, we thank you in supporting us in keeping all students safe.
We had our first whole school meeting this week, online, to celebrate the learning across all classes and to talk about how we are living our values at Franklin Primary School. Across the coming weeks we will be looking for examples of students who are demonstrating our values of Aspiration, Respect, Courage and Growth. If we were to have another school value, for me it would be kindness and I will be asking students across all grades what kindness means to them and gathering our ideas together of what Kindness at Franklin Primary School looks like, I encourage you to talk to your young people about what you think kindness looks like.

Bus Code of Conduct
The Department of State Growth (DSG) has released a Passenger Code of Conduct (the Code) for School Bus Services.
The Code sets out the expected standards of behaviour for students when using a bus.
It provides guidance and processes for bus operators and drivers to follow when a student breaches the Code, ensuring that all students, and breaches of the Code, are treated in a fair and consistent manner.
To access The Code, please use the following link:

Launching into Learning is back!!!
As COVID restrictions begin to ease, Gumnuts will resume next Monday OUTDOORS.
Please see the attached flyer for the remaining weeks of term.
In Prep we have been continuing to look at new letters each week. We try to do some different activities with our letter and sound work. Lately we have done some clay work (c), had an ocean (o) and made letters from sticks (c and k). We have been able to blend our sounds together to make words like and, is, hot, pup, ant and many, many more. During maths we have been looking at positional language such as before, after, over, under. We have been working on numbers that come before and after. Before is much trickier to get the hang of than after! Our Inquiry has moved on to sharing our special places, and our museum of ‘special things’ is complete. Some of the common reasons for things being special have been things being unusual, old, new, made for us or given to us by someone we love. The most common thing was that they made us feel happy.
In Year 1 we are exploring what half means, and different ways we can show our understanding.
We have made half with things from our lunch boxes, created beautiful butterfly wings and made half an insect whole again.
Inquiry –How can we make a positive difference to ourselves and people around us?
After being researchers in small groups and discovering that we had used the word ‘kind’ many times in the making of our class rules, we explored this special human quality further. In pairs, we thought about and discussed what kindness looks like, feels like and sounds like and recorded our thinking in a Y Chart. After this, we were presented with some images and we had to record our thinking using the sentence starters ‘I see’, ‘I think’, ‘I wonder. We were asked which ones we thought connected to kindness.
“I see kindness. I think it’s respect. I wonder why it is called kindness.” - Olivia
“I see people being kind. I think it means kindness. I wonder why it is called respect.”- Addison.
As our responses kept being recorded on all the images, we realised that the images were all connected to our school values – Respect, Courage, Growth and Aspiration.
“I see people climbing. I think it takes courage to climb. I wonder why courage is connected to the school values”. Charlie
We borrowed Charlie’s wonder to spark our next investigation. Each of us recorded our thinking in response to his wonder which helped us delve further into how Courage makes a positive difference to ourselves and the people around us.
In Maths, we have been exploring the quickest ways to count large amounts of objects as well as exploring right angles in 2D shapes. Our literacy groups, word investigation and handwriting programs are in full swing. We have been looking at verbs in sentences and how they can change when using the past tense.
Year 4/5 have been thinking about ‘What makes me, me?’ and have come up with their first thinking. Students thought about the physical elements including our blood and bones, the foods we like, but the biggest response to ‘What makes me, me?’ was our families and friends.
We worked on being collaborators and communicators working together with counters, buttons and blocks to create some interesting and beautiful responses to the things that make us unique and individual.
In 4/5 we have also been thinking about the difference and similarities between ‘aspiring’ and ‘inspiring’ and what this can mean for our sense of identity and self. This investigation has led us to research some people we find inspirational.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Students would have received nomination forms in relation to the School Association Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to be held on Monday 21st March 2022 at 6pm at the School. You can attend remotely. Please contact the office to have an email sent to you.
The Department has advised that School Association Committee (SAC) meetings are to go ahead with COVID-safe measures in place. SAC members are considered volunteers and must be vaccinated to attend meetings on DoE site. SAC members that are not vaccinated can participate in meetings remotely (online, via phone etc.).
Please let us know before Monday if you are going to attend via online so the invite can be sent to you.
At this time new committee members will be elected.
All positions are available for appointment.
Straight after the Annual General Meeting, the new association will hold its first association meeting.
I encourage all parents and guardians to come along and be part of the Association to put forward new ideas, volunteer for events and activities and support our amazing school. As without the Association a lot of events and changes would not be made possible.
For those that are new to the school or social media, the School Association operates a Facebook Page titled: “School families and friends- Franklin”.
I encourage all parents and guardians to join as it’s a great place to see updates, information and news regarding Franklin Primary School. Please note that this page will not print personal information pertaining to students, and does not override information provided by the Department of Education, the School or a student’s teacher.
If you have any questions or concerns prior to the Annual General Meeting and the next meeting then please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the other committee members.
