Dear Franklin Families,
I have made the very difficult decision to retire from education at the end of Term 1. This was an exceptionally challenging decision for me as I have always been committed to improving learning outcomes for all students and to leading inclusive education in our schools. Franklin holds many special memories and connections for me. I reflect on the last 5 years and the times our school community came together to show strength, care and support for each other when faced with bush fires and then a global pandemic. The ongoing improvements to facilities, redevelopment of classrooms and a new Kinder, has helped the school to grow in many positive ways.
During my time at Franklin, I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside a school team that cares, supports, guides, listens and celebrates the important things. It is also important to mention the positive partnerships with families and the wider community that have supported our students to reach their potential and to feel safe, respected and connected. Family partnerships are critical to achieving positive learning outcomes.
I have so appreciated working with all of you over the years in many shared roles. Thank you all for supporting me along the journey and helping to make Franklin Primary a place where respectful partnerships have provided students with the opportunity to gain the understandings, skills and attributes needed to achieve their individual potential.
To ensure a smooth transition, Michelle Nowak will continue in her current role until the Department selects a substantive Principal in Term 2.
Take care and have a great Easter holiday break.
Linda Heerey
Dear Families,
I would firstly like to acknowledge Linda’s dedication and leadership, when I arrived at Franklin at the beginning of the year it was clear that Franklin Primary is a school that has been lead by someone who is passionate about providing our young people with the very best learning opportunities possible. The dedication and care of the staff team, the facilities and the quality of the learning provided are all testament to Linda’s leadership. On behalf of the staff and students I would like to wish Linda the very best in her retirement and I know that she will be greatly missed by the school community.
As we end the term I would also like to acknowledge the resilience and flexibility of our students, staff and families, the disruption of COVID has certainly provided us all with some challenges, there have been very few weeks that have been ‘normal’, instead we have needed to change and adapt on a daily basis, and have done so in a supportive and caring manner. I hope for all of you that the holidays provides a much needed rest and reset. Have a wonderful break and I look forward to continuing to work with the Franklin Primary School community during term 2.
Michelle Nowak
The weather looked after us at LiL this week what a nice morning. It was great to see so many people come and enjoy the morning.
The last two weeks have been interesting to say the least! Through Covid-19 and general illness we have had many people absent. The silver lining is that our Prep class have coped amazingly well. They have shown they are able to be flexible, understanding, and resilient. I am incredibly proud of our class and cannot thank families and the school community enough for being extra supportive and positive during this time.
Prior to all the illness we continued to look at positional language, directions, following instructions and sequencing. We enjoyed the book “What the Ladybird Heard” by Julia Donaldson and did many activities around this book. We collaborated and built models of the farm, and then followed the directions to the fine prize cow. This was lots of fun and it showed just how good we are at working in groups. We are currently working on writing a book around positional and directional language so stay tuned for that!
We have finished looking at all the Phase 2 Letters and Sounds letters and are revising them over the next week. Next term we will move on to Phase 3 and look at high frequency words and word families to assist us with our reading and writing.
In the lead up to Easter we have been doing some Art and using directed drawing videos to show us how to draw things. We followed the instructions perfectly and came up with some wonderful Easter Bunny drawings!
Finally, congratulations to our (almost) outgoing class captains, Rachel and Harvey.
Rachel and Harvey have been outstanding role models for our school and shown our school values every day without fail.
Inquiry –How can we make a positive difference to ourselves and people around us?
After we had explored the value of Courage, we looked at the ‘I See, I Think, I Wonder’ responses for images to do with Growth.
“I see seeds. I think it’s growth. I wonder why there are gears on the trees.” - Rain. We borrowed Rain’s wonder to spark our next investigation. Each of us recorded our thinking in response to his wonder which helped us delve further into how having an open growth mindset makes a positive difference to ourselves and the people around us.
In Maths, we have been exploring different strategies to solve subtraction problems such as using the number line and using drawings to write our own word problems for others to solve. We have just started looking at why and how we use halves and quarters as well as putting our class birthday data into a bar graph.
In Literacy, we have been practising our comprehension skills and understanding the difference between syllable chunks and the letter sound patterns in words. We have been brushing up on our writing skills by looking at the structure of persuasive text after exploring how ads persuade people and how the 6 thinking hats show different ways of thinking when presenting an argument. We have been learning about the writing cycle by collecting ideas, making and editing draft copies then publishing letters to people who we are trying to convince.
Despite a disrupted term, our 5/6 class have still managed to engage in some terrific learning, especially around our Natural Disasters Inquiry. We have investigated a diverse range of disasters both in Australia and internationally. Our final projects are almost completed, with students focussing on a particular disaster and demonstrating their research skills by reporting on its features, effects and the scientific understanding of how it occurred. Other students have used their creative skills to reinterpret and illustrate Aboriginal Dreamtime legends of various Australian Natural Disasters throughout history.
Wishing everyone a very relaxing and healthy break.
Mr Holmstrom
We finally managed to get back to Art this week after a few weeks’ hiatus. The students worked very hard to create some very eye-catching Easter bunting. Hopefully next term we will manage to have more consistent classes as we have some very talented (and keen) artists in our school.

Our Class Captains for this term, drew the winning tickets in our recent Easter raffle. Congratulations to all the lucky winners. $724 was raised.

“Who are your Franklin Primary School Association Representatives for 2022?”
Chairperson- Jess Watson
Hi, my name is Jess Watson and I have been elected as the Associations Chair Person for 2022. I have two children who attend Franklin Primary, Addison who is in grade 2 and Paige who is in Prep.
I first got involved with the Association when Addison was in pre kinder, to learn about how the school works, to contribute ideas to improve the school and to also volunteer mine and my husband’s time to school events.
It has been really rewarding to be an active part of the Association, to meet and engage with other families and students, and to see what else we can do to make the school an even more amazing to learn and grow.
Please stop me and say hello, contact me if you have any questions or concerns and let me know if I can do anything. Here is to a wonderful and exciting 2022.

There are loads of discounts available with the membership - including 4% off Woolworths gift cards (so you can save on everyday grocery shopping!), Big W, JB-Hi Fi, Wish Cards, Rebel Sports, Supercheap Auto. MOTHERS DAY
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, the Association is unable to hold a Mother’s Day event on school grounds. Discussions are occurring with the staff to see what contribution the Association can make to acknowledge the wonderful mums, and other important people in our children’s lives.
It is the Association’s aim to hold an event later on in the year (when restrictions ease) to acknowledge the parents and guardians of students.
For those that are new to the school or social media, the School Association operates a Facebook Page titled: “School families and friends- Franklin”.
I encourage all parents and guardians to join as it’s a great place to see updates, information and news regarding Franklin Primary School. Please note that this page will not print personal information pertaining to students, and does not override information provided by the Department of Education, the School or a student’s teacher.
If you have any questions or concerns prior to the next meeting then please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the other committee members.
