Hi Everyone,
Franklin Primary School, a community school, a place that is so much more than a building or a site, it’s a place of wondering, a place of learning, a place where the relationships we have with our students; their families and this amazing community means that we have a real sense of connection and affinity to each other. When your child walks through the gates our staff genuinely care how they are or how their weekend was and what they love about school. Our school is your school and I encourage you to continue to support us in what we and our community is achieving by being an active part of our school. In fact, our school association is always looking for new members and we have our AGM this week on the 5th of March at 3:30pm in the library. If you would like to know more about the association, what it does, how it works and what the roles are then come in and have a chat.
We have quite a lot going on over the next two weeks. We have our Swimming Carnival for grade P-6 on Friday 8th of March. The weather is meant to be nice (or at least that is what I am telling the kids) so please make sure you pack some extra clothes and a towel. This will be the first time our grade two students will be in the big pool so if they are a little nervous you can let them know that they will only be in the shallow end and should be able to touch the bottom. We also have our PAT Early years testing in prep and grade 1 continuing, which will see teachers and Mr D work with groups of one or two students to see where they are at in their learning of letters and sounds, reading and number.
Today we had our Student Representative Council and House Captain speeches for students in grades 3-6. In a sign of the agency and voice our student’s have, we had over 30 amazing young people representing themselves and what they would like to achieve at Franklin. If this is a sign of things to come we should be very excited for the future at Franklin both at the school and in our community.
What an amazing school we have,
James Milne

Prep/1 have really settled into our routines. There is always a lot to fit in to our mornings especially but we are getting faster every day.
We have been curious learners and come up with wonderings which we have displayed on the wall. There is a wide range of wonderings, from how things are made, to how things grow and why things happen. Once we have sorted these out a little bit we will launch our inquiry to explore.
In maths we have been following, continuing and creating patterns. Our daily number work has been done through games and other activities that are consolidating our knowledge of numbers to five.
In our phonics learning we have now covered 9 sounds. We have been practising listening for initial sounds, segmenting small words to write them, and blending them together to read simple 3 letter words.
Over the last fortnight, we have decided on our most important rules to have for our class in 2024. We have also worked in teams to use the most common words found in our investigations to put our own questions together to go towards finding our Big HASS Inquiry question for Term 1 – ‘How do we have a safe, positive and active learning space so we can learn as best as we can?’. We have thought about our own individual goals for the year, and each of us has come up with three goals to work towards in 2024, displaying these on a self- portrait/caricature poster. We have also been focussing on Number/Place Value in Maths as well as starting our routine group literacy/phonics sessions. Even though it was a very hot day, our Crazy Hair Day efforts were a hit and lots of fun was had in air-conditioning.
Gardening is off to a flying start this term! Our first crop has been sowed and if you look carefully, you can see the beginnings of seedlings. Here are the current sowed crops in our Garden.
Garden Beds Plan
Younger students have also been harvesting flowers that have gone to seed including Nigella flowers, Rock Lillies, Snap Dragon Flowers and Irises ready to be stored for sowing in the perennial garden the near future.
Lastly a big thanks to everyone for their generous donations of flower seeds and bulbs for the perennial garden.
