Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
I am pleased to provide you with an update on the recent activities and developments at our school
Swimming Carnival Results: Mountain House vs. River House
Our annual swimming carnival proved to be a spirited and competitive event, showcasing the talents and sportsmanship of our students. Congratulations to both Mountain House and River House for their outstanding performance! After a day filled with enthusiastic participation and remarkable achievements, River House emerged as the victors. However, every participant demonstrated dedication and teamwork, making the event a memorable success.
New Outdoor Learning Deck for Upper Primary Classes
We are thrilled to announce the construction of a new outdoor learning deck specifically designed for our upper primary classes has gone through the advertising and design phase. This innovative addition to our school will provide a positive environment to engage in hands-on learning experiences and provide more spaces for learning. We anticipate that the outdoor deck will enhance our curriculum and offer students opportunities to connect with nature and will be completed before Term 3.
Update on Learning: Tiered Intervention for Reading
One of our ongoing initiatives to support student achievement is the implementation of tiered intervention strategies for reading across the school. This personalized approach allows us to identify and address the individual needs of students at various proficiency levels, ensuring that every child receives the support and resources necessary to succeed. By incorporating tiered intervention into our literacy instruction, we aim to empower students to become confident and proficient readers.
Wonderful Start Back to the Year
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to our entire school community for contributing to a wonderful start to the year. The enthusiasm and dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families have set a positive tone for the months ahead. Together, we will continue to foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and student-centered learning.
As always, I encourage open communication and feedback from all stakeholders as we work together to provide the best possible educational experience for our students. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Warm regards,
James Milne
Principal
EdSmart - Communication Platform
EdSmart – Communication Platform
Dear Parent/Guardian
Our School will be switching over to a new messaging platform for communicating with you.
The new platform, called EdSmart is an Australian platform which is designed to improve communication in school communities by allowing electronic messaging i.e. SMS and emails. For now, it will be used to manage absences messages i.e. you will receive a SMS or email alert if your child is absent from school requesting a response. It will also allow us to send a communication message to all parent/guardians.
Please ensure your validation forms are returned to the office by 18th March 2024 so that we have all your current contact details as this will be our main way of communicating with you regarding student absences.
The platform will, over time, be rolled out across all Tasmanian Government Schools and new features will be added.
You will receive a text message and/or an email with further details. Note, the text message sender will be a shortened version of our school’s name - Please keep an eye out for it!
Further information is available on the Department’s website
Patterns, patterns everywhere!
What is a pattern? Where do we find them?
The kindergarten children have been exploring all things pattern. We have discovered patterns in our natural environment, on our clothes and even on our food!
They’re learning how to create patterns using different materials, taking photos on a pattern hunt and we thought we would create a patchwork ‘blanket’ using all the different patterns we have discovered.
The children love spending time in the kitchen. We made tasty apple crumble with apples that were kindly donated to us. Thanks Tyler!
Currently in Grade 1/2 Page we are looking more closely at numbers and what each digit really means. We have partitioned numbers into two, three and four different groups and investigated place value. We used Base 10 Blocks to understand two-digit numbers and had a go at building different numbers.
In Literacy we are working on a special project all about stories. We have learnt the different parts of a story by exploring Fairy Tales. So far we have worked with Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Our project involves creating a Stop Animation of the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We are in the middle of making the characters, setting, props and everything we need to retell the story. Here are some photos of us in the process.
In between our key learning area lessons over the last two weeks, we have been involved in incidental learning moments that strengthen our confidence, resilience as well as our creative and critical minds. These moments can include: experiences with rock painting at lunch time with our kind TA Kylie; practising fluent decoding skills with a partner; being brave to hold our class pet Spiny Leaf Insects; bringing in from home our interesting finds or our creative masterpieces; giving our partner a spelling test on our weekly individual phonics focus; doing our best at our fun Swimming Carnival; helping Mrs Wood in our vegie garden or working together in teams to solve floor puzzles.
On Tuesday this week the 4/5 class, along with 4/5/6 class were lucky enough to attend an excursion at the Huonville PCYC.
The activities promised to build students’ resilience, teamwork and co-operation.
Students had to navigate an obstacle course, as a team, leaving no member behind. Students put forward ideas, negotiated with each other and some students emerged as leaders. Watching one group encourage each other, offer support and guidance, especially towards peers who aren’t usually within their friendship group, was amazing.
I saw shy students assert themselves as co-operative leaders that looked out for the peers.
Using the rope to get from one side of the room to the other was a favourite, as was using planks and cushions to navigate the room without touching the walls or floors…..but of course there wasn’t enough planks and students had to work together to balance and move them around.
Students faced their fears with the rope ladder and pushed themselves out of their comfort zones working in groups, combining their strengths to achieve and finish the course.
I was proud of what these students achieved!
Hi everyone,
We have enjoyed a wonderful start to the school year in 4/5/6 with so many amazing moments. We have spent time developing relationships and leadership skills in the class whilst also focusing in on our learning. Students have put their hand up to run our sports store room, hand out duty vests to teachers, run our Daily PE program, join our SRC, be house captains whilst also putting their hands up to be our class captains. We have the most amazing bunch of students in our class.
Continuing from this we recently headed to PCYC for a resilience and leadership program that focused on communication, problem solving and teamwork. We completed a challenge course, supported each other to overcome fears and develop our courage and enjoyed the activities like pickle ball and soccer that were offered as extra. Not to mention went crazy in their fun factory. To Bianca Jackman and the team at PCYC thank you so much we loved every moment. A real highlight was the leadership of Jax and Aiden who stepped up and really showed a connection to the students in the class who needed a little bit of extra support.
Moving forward we continue to have a huge focus on our reading. A reminder if you are reading at home with your child, make sure you fill out our home reading record so their dedication and effort is rewarded.
As you child/rens teachers we encourage you to reach out and discuss how they are going in our wonderful 4/5/6 class.
