KINDER
At the end of last term, I overheard some of my students discussing their collections that they have at home. Recognising that this might be a good inquiry journey to go down, I decided to ask the class, what they collected. The conversation flowed easily, with children having some collections in common and everyone contributing to the conversation.
So, this term we are delving a little deeper into the wonderful world of collections! The beauty of this is that they all collect things. Whether it is a certain toy, rocks, sticks, gems and even leaves. They can be the expert on their collection. And already I have seen increased confidence amongst some children when it comes to speaking in front of the group, about their collection.
Mason, said I like collecting bones so that I can find out which animals they have come from.
Harvey, likes to collect agate because he likes the patterns they make when they get wet.
Kate, mentioned that she liked collecting feathers because of the colours, but….she admitted that she has lost most of her collection.
Conor declared that you need at least 5 items of the same thing before it could be called a collection!
And….off we go…
Last week, we explored a coin collection and noticed all of the different shapes, sizes, numbers and pictures. We looked at and sketched bones. We followed Harvey’s idea and dipped lots of agate into water to look at the different patterns.
If any of you out their reading this has a wonderful and interesting collection that you would be happy to come in and share with the Kinders, we would be very appreciative.
