What a great day for the athletics carnival on Tuesday! The respite from the recent rain allowed us to have a wonderful day running, jumping, throwing and enjoying a variety of physical activities on the oval. Students were excited to be able to represent their house and proudly wore their house colours.
It was great to see students eager to have a go at all events, persevering to finish the longer distance races and encouraging and helping each other.
Congratulations to the Yellow house for their outstanding effort, and congratulations also to the Blue House, who were very close on the heels of Yellow!
Mr Mitchell will be looking carefully at the results of events to choose a team for the Huon and Channel Athletics Carnival. This will be communicated to students and parents next week.
Thank you to the parents who helped on the day and the teachers for ensuring the day ran smoothly. An especially big thank you needs to go to Mr Mitchell for the wonderful job he has done in organising and running the carnival and to Rob for setting up, packing up and helping out with activities.
It has been a privilege to spend the past 2 and a half weeks in your lovely school. In that short time I have seen evidence of the exceptional learning happening in all classrooms. Teachers use effective strategies to spark the curiosity of students, who are given the tools to take responsibility and to invest in their own learning. Thank you to all students and staff for sharing your learning environment with me.
Mrs Heerey is looking forward to being back with you on Monday.
Kind Regards
Andrea Dare
It was busy at LiL this week with the children enjoying exploring the slime, making patterns with the coloured blocks, listening to a story and singing our song at group time.
This term the Kindergarten children are lucky enough to have the grade 4/5s as their buddies!
This is a wonderful way to build friendships and connections across the school.
Our first session was spent getting to know each other whilst having a play in the Kindergarten (which some of the 4/5s had missed I think!), and reading books.
This Wednesday they played a variety of board and card games together. These types of games help teach turn taking, being a good sport and building resilience as well. To see the smiles on their faces and hear the laughter in the room was a joy to be a part of.
The 4/5s have been terrific role models for the Kinder children, by using their manners and being kind. So much so, that the Kinders declare their love for their buddies after each session!
Year One has been enjoying their new Inquiry unit “What is change?” with students exploring how technology has changed over time. After some interesting donations from the Huonville tip shop we thought about what these items might be. After predicting what might be inside, we started “tinkering”.
Lance Balchin’s book Mechanica has inspired us to reuse parts of these items to make an insect.
On Monday this week, we had Gina (Education Officer from Hydro Tas) come to talk to us about water and its importance for all living things. She kindly answered the questions we had written and sent to her before the visit. She explained to us how the turbine and generator worked from the force of the water dropping from the dams and used Lego characters so that we could understand the size of the turbines, generators and pipes at the power stations. She showed us what happens when you rub a very strong magnet along a bar of copper. We all took a turn so we could feel the force and movement of the electrons. The bar of copper that was wrapped in yellow tape was so heavy.
We then went out onto the deck to watch and learn from a series of experiments. We made predictions before each experiment. We did three experiments to see if the amount of water in each bottle, the size of the holes and the height from which the water dropped made a difference to the power behind the water making the turbines spin. Our inquiry on the importance of water continues…
Term 4 is upon us and we are busy preparing to share our inquiry journey with our families. It has been a long but fulfilling journey, and we are excited to showcase our understandings and interests within this inquiry.
This week alone has been very busy with a St John’s information session on Monday where we learnt what first aid is, how important it is to know our full address, and how to begin assisting people before we can find an adult. Tuesday of course was our Athletics Carnival, and our Grade 3s spent their first whole day at the carnival to participate in the 200m, 400m and 800m races. It was a huge day, filled with lots of fun and thankfully lots of sun! I was incredibly impressed with the amount of participation from our class and I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. I saw some shining examples of courage, resilience, encouragement, and some incredible heart-warming displays of friendship.
Please keep a close eye on Seesaw. Term 4 is so busy and I will do my best to update and remind as much as possible. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me either via email, Seesaw or make an appointment to discuss any issues.
We started the term with a fabulous visit to Fat Pig Farm where we met the animals, explored the garden, planted a lettuce patch and made worm farms for their gardens.
Earlier this week we had a visit from St John Ambulance and participated in their first aid course for school students. We practised checking for danger, response, breathing and sending for help.
Our inquiry is well underway, and our question is “Why do materials matter?” Student have been examining the properties of materials, comparing processed synthetic and natural materials, considering the best materials for certain purposes, and reflecting on the environmental impact of the materials we choose to use.
In English we have been focusing on spelling, reading and comprehension, and in maths students have been working on measurement and calculating area and perimeter.
This term we have buddied up with the Kinder class. We have had a lot of fun with them so far and we look forward to supporting them in transitioning to the big school playground this term.
A huge congratulations to everyone for giving their best at the school athletics carnival. I’m so proud of you all for getting involved.
5/6 have had a very busy start to Term 4. Our inquiry focus this term is centred around understanding Tasmania’s social and cultural history through an investigation of colonialism and its impact on both the settlers and the Tasmanian Aboriginal people. We have been studying some of the pivotal historical events and figures in Tasmania’s colonial history as well as some of the engagements between Europeans and Tasmania’s Indigenous people. An early and friendly meeting between Captain Cook and some Nuenonne people occurred at Resolution Bay on Bruny island in 1777. After considering artworks and recounts of this meeting, the class collaborated to create a magnificent 3D model to represent this significant event.
In maths we are honing our skills around measurement and have been particularly working with area and perimeter so far this term.
After a wet few days, the sun came out for our Sports Carnival on Tuesday. It was a fantastic day with a terrific range of athletic and novelty events and some outstanding participation.
